The Daily Star reported that the interim government of Bangladesh approved on Thursday the protection of participants in the July 2024 large-scale uprising and determined to pardon those who organized the uprising within the framework of political confrontation.
In July 2024, anti-government protests erupted in Bangladesh, with college students and those dissatisfied with high unemployment and economic prospects actively participating in the event. The riots and clashes between protesters and police resulted in approximately 1400 deaths. On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh who had worked in the government for nearly 20 years, resigned and flew to India, where she remains until now. Since then, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took over Bangladesh.
The newspaper quoted Asif Nazrul, the legal advisor to the Bangladeshi government, as saying, "I previously announced that this is our obligation to the participants of the July large-scale uprising. Within the framework of this obligation, the Consultative Committee has now approved this decree. From this moment on, no new criminal charges can be brought against them for the actions of the political opposition organization that occurred in July and August. Existing cases will be suspended and no new charges will be brought
Nazruhr explained that the power of pardon applies to organized actions aimed at overthrowing the previous government and restoring democracy by July August 2024. He also pointed out that amnesty does not apply to criminal acts committed for personal gain, greed, or revenge. He pointed out in response to the question about the killing of police officers during the uprising that any deaths in political confrontations would be handled by the Human Rights Commission.
